Islands
are fun to design
If you have room in
your kitchen for an island, you'll probably want to add one to your plans.
To see if you have
the space available, just follow these simple guidelines...
The space between
two working countertops needs to be 42" (expand that to 48" for two cooks
working in the kitchen).
Space for a
walk-way between an island and an obstruction is the same as a normal hallway, 36".
When making your
plans for an island, try not to create an obstruction within your kitchen work triangle
that you will have to go around constantly.

An island is simply a cabinet placed in the middle of the
room. A standard base cabinet will do. You wil need to add a matching panel on
the back side of the base cabinet, as it is not finished. You may want to add other
embelishments to dress it up. Below is a 36" wide base cabinet with a simple
countertop added, which makes a fine 24" deep x 36" wide island cabinet.

For a larger
kitchen you may have the space to have even more features in your kitchen island. To
create your island you may use any combination of base cabinets and wall cabinets.
To convert a wall cabinet for placement within an island just add the toekick at the
bottom. A normal 30" wall cabinet is the same height as a base cabinet when a
4-1/2" toekick is added underneath.

Have fun with the
plans for your kitchen island. Use your imagination. Be creative. Here's a
couple of easy additions to start the creative juices flowing...
